Ten Years of Apothegms (With an Announcement!)

Exactly ten years ago today, I published my first set of short proverbs I call “Apothegms and Observations.” I was soon to turn twenty then, and am soon to turn thirty now.

The original idea came to me as I was sitting at a bus stop reading the Analects of Confucius. I thought to myself, “Wow, this is strikingly insightful and useful, even though it is thoroughly un-systematic. This could be a good way of getting thoughts down.” And so I tried it out.

Once I started, I discovered that I could just keep going. The short little observations kept coming, and coming, and coming. I have almost never set aside time to write them–they instead sprung out of various pre-existing experiences and contemplations. There have been many times that I think the well has finally dried up. But at least so far, over 1600 apothegms later, it hasn’t.

I take this to mean that this literary form suits me. Or, God created my mind for this literary form. The minds of others, of whom I confess I am often envious, naturally float into Essay. Others float into Short Story. Still others float into Oration. My mind floats into Apothegm.

Of course, looking back, I often feel quite silly or embarrassed at what I’ve written. Such is the nature of writing, I guess. I see my arrogance and self-indulgence and misplaced focus all too clearly. Who am I to adopt a tone of importance? I really don’t even begin to live up to all this stuff, and I feel like I get it all wrong.

And so I am profoundly grateful to all who have played a part in this wild adventure over the years. Without innumerable words of genuine encouragement, I doubt I could have had the will or desire to continue posting. I love you all, and owe you a great debt.

And with that little reflection, I have a big announcement!

I have partnered with the small publishing firm Shortster to produce a real-life book containing the first fifty sets of apothegms, slightly revised and edited.

We have been collaborating together for many months now, and are nearing the end of our work. We expect to have a finished product later this year. I’ll make another post here when it is fully ready, so be on the lookout!

I again want to thank everyone who has been along for the ride, and am so very excited (and nervous!) to release a quality compilation for folks to enjoy.
